The Foundation has identified specific objectives listed above in each of its three target areas. The Foundation is interested in developing sustainable funding relationships with organizations that share these objectives. The representative grants that follow are examples of these relationships:
  1. Balboa Park Cultural Partnership. This project brings together all of the Institutions in Balboa Park to achieve advantages that accrue in joint purchasing, planning and infrastructure development. The partnership has also streamlined the governance of the Park and the relationship between the Insititutions and the City. The Foundation was the initial funder of the project and has served on the Advisory Committee since the outset. Currently almost all of the Institutions in the Park are members.

  2. Center for Ethics in Science and Technology. The Foundation participated in the organization and has been the principal funder of the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology. This Center has, as its participant members, UCSD, USD, representitives of the San Diego County Bar Association, the clergy and business leaders. The purpose of the Center is to educate community leaders on the issues arising from the development and advancement of technology. The Center provideds a forum for the presentation of diverse views on current issues in the field of ethics in science and technology.

  3. Capacity Building in the Diamond Neighborhoods. The Foundation is a member of the San Diego Neighborhood Funders and its President is Chair of the Family of Funds of that organization. The Foundation individually, and through the Neighborhood Funders Group and the Jacobs Center For Non Profit Innovation has supported a variety of projects and programs in the Diamond Neighborhoods of San Diego. The Foundation funded the Community Faces Project at Market Creek Plaza. This project had the community identify local leaders whose life experience and contribution provide an inspiration to neighborhood residents. The portraits of these individuals were painted by local artists working in teams that included established artists and apprentices. These portraits are installed on the outside of the Market at the Plaza. The stories of these local heroes were compiled by the youth of the neighborhood and are maintained on tape at the Malcolm X Library. This endeavor is to create a model for community capacity building in multi-ethnic, disadvantaged neighborhoods. The Foundation is also a financial partner with the Jacobs Center.

  4. Innovative, multidisciplinary approach in Science. The Foundation has created an innovation fund at CalIT2 at UCSD. This grant supports the development of creative, multidisciplinary approaches to technology. In 2006-2007, this grant supported, among other things, a number of collaborations between CalIT2 and the museums in Balboa Park by which advanced technologies have been made available to enhance the museum experience.
